Chapter 6.9.2: Energy flows from Yin to Yang organ and from Yang to Yin organ in the controlling relationship. The polarity of the energy remains the same.
The Controlling Relationship
Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. This is the Ke cycle. The Grandmother controls the Grandson.
Example: Kidney (Water/Yin) controls Small Intestine (Fire/Yang). Kidney Yin flows to Small Intestine and controls its Yang. If Kidney Yin is deficient, Small Intestine Yang is uncontrolled — causing heat symptoms (colicky pains, urgency, symptoms after coffee/alcohol).
Difference from Mother-Son Cycle
Mother-Son (Sheng)
Energy flows Yin→Yin, Yang→Yang. Same polarity maintained.
Controlling (Ke)
Energy flows Yin→Yang, Yang→Yin. But polarity still maintained — Yin stays Yin, Yang stays Yang.
Deficiency Causing Lack of Control
When the controlling organ is deficient, the controlled organ's Yang rises uncontrolled:
The Grandmother Point
Each meridian has a 'Grandmother point' that can increase the opposite polarity. These work if there is energy in the 'Grandmother organ.' Used to unblock energy flow between the controlling and controlled organs.
Excess Causing Over-Control
When the controlling organ is in excess, it over-controls the controlled organ. Example: Fire (Heart/SI) over-controls Metal (Lung) — causing thin, dry, red, inflamed skin (eczema). Treatment: sedate SI 8 and TW 10, tonify Lung Yin (Lu 1, Lu 8).
Element Cycle Interactor
Wood→Earth, Earth→Water, Water→Fire, Fire→Metal, Metal→Wood. Grandmother controls Grandson.
Fire
→ Son: Earthfiremetal(Fire melts Metal)

Where in your life is the controlling cycle out of balance? Which element is over-controlling (bullying) or under-controlling (losing structure)?
