Luo-Connecting & Yuan-Source Points

Chapter 6.5: The energy flow between coupled meridians in the superficial energy circulation. These points can change the polarity of energy.

The Superficial Energy Circulation

Exterior meridians flow between skin and muscle. Yin meridians flow on ventral-medial sides, Yang meridians on lateral-dorsal sides. The climate in these two surfaces is very different — like cool and hot rooms. When energy flows from one to the other, it changes polarity.

Luo-Connecting Points

Point where energy flows into the coupled meridian — always the point of entry.

Luo of Yin organ:

Tonifies its Yin (and the Yin of coupled organ) and sedates its Yang (and Yang of coupled organ). Balances a 'one-up, one-down' imbalance.

Luo of Yang organ:

Tonifies its Yang (and Yang of coupled organ) and sedates its Yin (and Yin of coupled organ).

Yuan-Source Points

The most powerful and binding point of a meridian. Point where energy flows out to the coupled meridian. Connects with many other meridians:

Energy Flow Direction: Yuan to Luo

The author's contention: energy flows from Yuan (source) to Luo (entry). Classical Chinese texts do not specify the direction, only that 'a Luo-connecting point connects the two coupled meridians.'

Evidence: P 6 and Lu 7 make the person very Yin (points of entry, not exit). GB 37 ('Bright Sight') improves function (increases Yang). St 40 reduces mucus (decreases Yin). These all suggest energy enters at the Luo point.

Clinical Principle

"It is not always necessary to use both points. It is sufficient to use only the Luo-connecting point of the deficient organ. If the Yin is deficient, use the Luo of the Yin organ. If the Yang is weak, use the Luo of the Yang organ."

Suggested Prescription

Lu 9Lu 1UB 13

Rationale

• Tonification (Mother) point — tonifies 90% house energy of Lung.

• Mu-Front point — tonifies cooling/calming Yin of Lung.

• Back-Shu point — tonifies functional Yang of Lung.

• Influential point: Lu 9 (Blood vessels) — treats related tissue group.
