Practice Tracking & Progression

Make self-hypnosis a sustainable practice. Log sessions, track your depth, build streaks, and celebrate milestones.

Why Tracking Matters

Self-hypnosis is a skill. Like any skill, it improves with consistent practice and honest feedback. Without tracking, it's easy to:

  • • Lose motivation when results seem slow
  • • Miss subtle progress that's happening beneath awareness
  • • Forget what worked when you hit a plateau
  • • Practice inconsistently and never build momentum

The tracking system below integrates with your app's Journal and UserPreference data to create a complete record of your hypnotic journey.

Session Journal

After every session, log:

  • • Date and time of the session
  • • Duration in minutes
  • • Induction used (progressive relaxation, eye fixation, etc.)
  • • Deepener used (elevator, staircase, yardstick, etc.)
  • • Depth achieved (using the yardstick: 1-36 inches, or light/medium/deep)
  • • Suggestions given (your key word or full suggestion)
  • • Subjective effectiveness (1-5 rating)
  • • Notes/reflection — what you noticed, any insights, resistance encountered

Use your app's Journal for this — each hypnosis session can be a journal entry with the mood set to "reflective." Over time, you'll build a rich record of your practice.

Streak Tracking

Consistency is the single most important factor in self-hypnosis success. Powers found that most people need about a month of daily practice to achieve reliable trance.

The Compound Effect:

Each session builds on the last. The posthypnotic suggestion "next time I go deeper and faster" compounds with repetition. A 7-day streak produces noticeably easier inductions. A 21-day streak produces significant results. A 90-day streak transforms your practice entirely.

Streak milestones:

  • • 3 days: You've started. The hardest part is beginning.
  • • 7 days: Your key word begins to work as a trigger.
  • • 14 days: Inductions feel shorter and easier. Depth stabilizes.
  • • 21 days: A habit is forming. The practice feels natural.
  • • 30 days: Powers' benchmark for reliable trance. You can likely enter trance at will.
  • • 90 days: The practice is integrated into your life. Results compound.

Depth Progression Chart

Track your depth over time using LeCron's yardstick method. After each session, use ideomotor signals to measure how deep you went:

Session 1: 8 inches (light)
Session 2: 10 inches (light)
Session 3: 12 inches (light, approaching medium)
Session 4: 15 inches (medium)
Session 5: 14 inches (medium)
Session 6: 18 inches (medium)
Session 7: 20 inches (medium)
Session 8: 22 inches (medium, approaching deep)
...and so on

Don't check depth until after your 4th session. Most people reach their deepest state only after 8-10 sessions; some continue improving for months. Depth isn't linear — expect fluctuations based on stress, sleep, and life circumstances.

Goal Tracking

For habit-change and health goals, track the external metric alongside your sessions:

  • • Smoking: Cigarettes per day, tracked weekly
  • • Weight: Weigh every 2 weeks (not daily — fluctuations discourage)
  • • Sleep: Sleep onset time, number of night awakenings
  • • Pain: 1-10 scale before and after sessions
  • • Anxiety: 1-10 scale, frequency of episodes per week
  • • Confidence: 1-10 self-rating before challenging situations

Correlate these with your session log. You'll see patterns: "On weeks I practice daily, my anxiety drops from 7 to 3. When I skip a week, it climbs back to 5."

The 21-Day Habit Replacement Program

For structured habit change, follow the American School of Hypnosis 21-day program:

Days 1-5: Foundation

Daily session using Script #1 (Mighty Oak — strength and stability). Build the trance habit. Focus on induction and deepening.

Days 6-10: Recoding

Daily session with Script #2 (NLP Recoding). Begin replacing the old pattern. Notice resistance and work with it.

Days 11-15: Release

Daily session with Script #3 (Forgiveness & Guilt Release). Let go of self-judgment about past failures.

Days 16-20: Confirmation

Daily session with Script #4 (Confirmation & Congratulations). Reinforce progress and build confidence.

Day 21+: Maintenance

Script #5 (Follow-up Session) weekly or monthly as needed. The new habit is now established.

Milestones to Celebrate

Mark these achievements in your journal:

  • ☐ First session completed — you started!
  • ☐ First eye closure — involuntary eyelid closing during induction
  • ☐ First light trance confirmed — yardstick reading of 8+ inches
  • ☐ First medium trance — yardstick reading of 13+ inches
  • ☐ Key word works in daily life — saying it triggers relaxation
  • ☐ First suggestion result — noticing a change you programmed
  • ☐ 7-day streak — habit forming
  • ☐ 14-day streak — inductions getting easier
  • ☐ 21-day streak — habit established
  • ☐ 30-day streak — reliable trance at will
  • ☐ First ideomotor response — pendulum or finger moves on its own
  • ☐ First successful regression — relived a memory in trance
  • ☐ Goal achieved — the specific change you were working toward

Overcoming Resistance

If you find yourself avoiding sessions or feeling "too busy," recognize this as subconscious resistance. The inner mind may fear change or want to keep the status quo. LeCron addresses this directly:

  • • Acknowledge it: "I notice I'm resisting. That's okay — it's natural."
  • • Question it: Use ideomotor signals to ask "Why am I resisting? What is the hidden benefit of staying the same?"
  • • Negotiate: "I understand the concern. Let's find a better way to meet that need."
  • • Start small: If 20 minutes feels too long, commit to 5 minutes. A short session beats no session.
  • • Remember your why: Reconnect with the reason you started. What will change when you succeed?

When Results Seem Slow

All major sources emphasize: results take time. Powers notes that some subjects learn self-hypnosis in 30 minutes; others take a year. Both are normal.

  • • Conditions took years to develop — they won't disappear overnight.
  • • Flare-ups are normal — questioning may stir up the issue temporarily. Persist.
  • • Plateaus happen — if stuck, try a different induction, a different time of day, or the role-playing method.
  • • You may be in trance without knowing it — the state can be imperceptible. Focus on results in daily life, not on "feeling hypnotized."
  • • Track the small wins — better sleep, calmer mornings, one less cigarette. These compound.

Powers' Assurance:

"If you follow the instructions and exercises that I give you assiduously, you should be able to achieve a depth of self-hypnosis suitable for solving many of your personal problems."

Building a Sustainable Practice

To make self-hypnosis a lifelong practice:

  • • Attach it to an existing habit — practice after your morning coffee, or before bed.
  • • Keep sessions short enough to sustain — 15 minutes daily beats 2 hours weekly.
  • • Vary your sessions — different inductions, different goals, to stay engaged.
  • • Join a community — your app's Circles feature can support group practice.
  • • Revisit foundations — periodically re-read the safety and theory modules.
  • • Teach what you learn — explaining to others deepens your own understanding.
  • • Celebrate progress — acknowledge every milestone, no matter how small.

Self-hypnosis is not a destination — it's a skill that deepens over a lifetime. The subconscious is infinitely patient and always ready to work with you. Meet it consistently, speak its language, and it will transform your life from within.
