Each chakra governs a specific psychological function — front aspects relate to feelings, back aspects to will, and head aspects to mental processes.
How Chakras Relate to Psychology
As a human matures, each chakra represents psychological patterns evolving in the individual's life. Most of us react to unpleasant experiences by blocking feelings and stopping energy flow. This affects chakra development and maturation, resulting in inhibited psychological function.
When chakras are functioning normally, each spins clockwise to metabolize particular energies from the universal field. A clockwise spin draws energy in — like the right-hand rule in electromagnetism. A counterclockwise spin sends energy outward, which is called projection in psychology.
Open vs. Closed Chakras
Clockwise (Open)
Feelings and psychological experiences governed by that chakra are well-balanced and full. Energy flows in from the UEF.
Counterclockwise (Closed)
Energy flows outward. The person projects their own energy into the world and says it IS the world. Based on childhood conclusions about reality.
Most people have three or four chakras spinning counterclockwise at any one time. These open more with therapy and personal growth work.
The Three Types of Centers
The seven major chakras are divided into three functional types:
For psychological health, all three types should be in balance and open. The front of the body governs feelings, the back governs will, and the head/throat govern reason.
The Twelve Chakra Points in Detail
Chakra 7: Crown Center
Mental
When Open: Integration of total personality with life and spiritual aspects. Connection to spirituality, transcendence, wholeness, peace, faith, purpose.
When Closed: No experiential connection to spirituality. Doesn't understand spiritual experiences.
Chakra 6A: Forehead Center
Mental
When Open: Capacity to visualize and understand mental concepts. Concepts of reality — how you see the world and how you think it will respond to you.
When Closed: Confused mental concepts, negative images about reality. Blocked creative ideas.
Chakra 6B: Mental Executive
Mental (Back)
When Open: Ability to carry out ideas in a practical way. Implementing creative ideas step-by-step in the physical world.
When Closed: Many ideas but nothing works out. Lacks training in taking simple steps. Resistant to being an apprentice.
Chakra 5A: Throat Center
Feeling
When Open: Taking responsibility for personal needs. Receiving — what comes toward you. Maturity: ceasing to blame others, going out to create what you need.
When Closed: Doesn't take in what is given. Negative expectations about what's coming. Attracts negative input via 'like attracts like.'
Chakra 5B: Professional Center
Will (Back)
When Open: Sense of self within society, profession, and peers. Success and fulfillment in work as life task.
When Closed: Holds back from giving best. Unsuccessful, conceals with pride. Plays the victim about lack of opportunities.
Chakra 4A: Heart Center
Feeling
When Open: Love — for self, children, mate, family, friends, neighbors, countrymen, all beings. The most important chakra in healing.
When Closed: Trouble loving — giving love without expecting return. Cannot see inner beauty and light in others.
Chakra 4B: Ego Will Center
Will (Back)
When Open: Outer will — acting in the physical world. Going after what you want. Seeing others as supports, not blocks.
When Closed: Believes God's and others' will is opposed. Sees people as obstacles. 'My will over yours.' Hostile universe belief.
Chakra 3A: Solar Plexus
Feeling
When Open: Knowing your unique place in the universe. Spiritual wisdom, deeply fulfilling emotional life. Center of human connectedness (cords).
When Closed: Blocks feelings. Not connected to uniqueness or purpose. Serves as block between heart and sexuality.
Chakra 3B: Diaphragmatic/Healing Center
Will (Back)
When Open: Intention toward physical health. Health-love toward the body. Very large in healers.
When Closed: Lack of intention for health. Self-destructive tendencies.
Chakra 2A: Pubic Center
Feeling
When Open: Quality of love for the opposite sex. Giving and receiving sexual and physical pleasure. Full body orgasm requires all centers open.
When Closed: Inability to achieve orgasm. Cannot receive sexual nourishment. Must always be in control.
Chakra 2B: Sacral Center
Will (Back)
When Open: Quantity of sexual energy. Sexual power and potency. Sex bathes the body in life energy, cleanses and revitalizes.
When Closed: Weak sexual drive. Avoidance of sex. Disclaiming its importance. Undernourishment.
Chakra 1: Coccygeal/Base Center
Will
When Open: Quantity of physical energy and will to live. 'I am here now.' Grounded in physical reality. Acts as generator, recharging others.
When Closed: Not 'here.' Avoids physical activity, low energy, sickly. Lacks physical power. Makes no strong impression.
Projection & Childhood Origins
The imagined reality we project through closed chakras is related to our "image"of what we concluded the world was like through childhood experiences — through the mind of the child we were then.
Since each chakra relates to a specific psychological function, what we project through each chakra will be within the general area that chakra functions, and will be very personal because each person's life experience is unique.
The Healing Process
By measuring the state of the chakras, we can determine one's overall long-term and current life issues. Chakras go through phases as they change from closed to open:
A chakra that is continually closed can turn around to fully open within as little as five minutes of deep crying. When a chronically closed chakra opens, another usually-open chakra may close briefly in compensation.
