How to read the state of each chakra using a pendulum — the complete reading chart and a case study from Brennan's Hands of Light.
Why Use a Pendulum?
A pendulum acts as an amplifier for your kinesthetic sense of energy flow. It helps increase sensitivity to the chakras' energy. As you hold it over a chakra, your energy flows into the pendulum's field, and that combined field interacts with the subject's field, causing the pendulum to move.
The size and direction of the movement indicates the amount and direction of energy flowing through the chakra.
Choosing a Pendulum
Brennan recommends beechwood pendulums that are pear-shaped, one inch in diameter and one and a half inches long. Their energy field is diffuse, easily permeated, and symmetrical around the vertical axis — which is important for measurement.
As you develop sensitivity, you may eventually be able to simply look at chakras to see how they're spinning, what their colors are, and how they're disfigured — but the pendulum is the best starting tool.
How to Measure
To measure the front chakras, ask your patient to lie on their back. For back chakras, have them lie on their stomach.
The size of the circle relates to the chakra's strength. Compare relative sizes among chakras — for health, all should be about the same size. If both people's energy is low, all chakras appear smaller; if high, larger.
The Complete Reading Chart
Each symbol is drawn as you are looking at the front of the patient's body.
C6
Clockwise, 6" diameter
Open and harmonious with clear perception of reality
CER3
Clockwise, elliptical, right, 3"
Open. Active/receptive split — active/masculine side more developed
CEL3
Clockwise, elliptical, left, 3"
Open. Receptive/feminine side more developed
CEV3
Clockwise, elliptical, vertical, 3"
Open. Upward displacement toward spiritual to avoid people
CEH6
Clockwise, elliptical, horizontal, 6"
Open. Compacting and holding down energy to avoid interaction
CC6
Counterclockwise, 6" diameter
Closed and inharmonious, with active projections of reality
CCER3
Counterclockwise, elliptical, right, 3"
Closed. Split, aggressive aspect more developed, projecting passive reality
CCEL2
Counterclockwise, elliptical, left, 2"
Closed. Passive aspect more developed, projecting aggressive reality
CCEV3
Counterclockwise, elliptical, vertical, 3"
Closed. Upward displacement to avoid people
CCEH5
Counterclockwise, elliptical, horizontal, 5"
Closed. Holding down and compacting energy to avoid interaction
V6
Vertical, 6" swing
Moving feelings toward spiritual to avoid personal interaction
H4
Horizontal, 4" swing
Holding energy flow down to avoid interactions. Strong block
R3
Right, 3" swing
Severe aggressive/passive split — aggressive side more developed
L4
Left, 4" swing
Severe aggressive/passive split — passive side more developed
S
Still (no movement)
Chakra not functioning at all — will lead to pathology if continued
CEAS5
Clockwise, elliptical, axis shift, 5"
Tremendous change taking place. Sensitive chaos. Deep work in progress
CCEAS6
Counterclockwise, elliptical, axis shifting, 6"
Same as CEAS, with negative chaos
Right/Left Interpretation
Elliptical swings indicate right/left imbalance. Right (CER) represents the active, aggressive, "masculine" or yang nature. Left (CEL) represents the passive, receptive, "feminine" or yin nature.
The more the circular movement is distorted, the more severe the psychological distortion. The most severe right/left split is the back-and-forth movement at a 45-degree angle (R3, L4).
Vertical & Horizontal Readings
Vertical Swing (V)
The person is diverting energy upward toward spirituality to avoid personal interaction. Example: V5 at chakra 3A means defining self through spiritual belief while cutting out human connection.
Horizontal Swing (H)
The person is holding down and compacting energy to avoid personal interaction. This can progress to a still chakra (S) — which leads to disease if continued.
The Axis Shift (CEAS)
When an individual is focusing psychological work on a particular aspect, the chakra may display chaotic or asymmetrical movement with a shifting axis. The pendulum swings chaotically, usually elliptical with a shifting axis.
This means a lot is going on. It's time to work deeply on the issues, but also give the client personal time and space for self-examination and transformation.
Qualities Beyond Direction
With practice, you can pick up qualities such as:
You can tell how stable a chakra is, how long it has been in its current state, whether it changes back and forth, and what percentage of time it's open (20% or 80%).
Case Study: Intensive Retreat
A woman came to two weeklong intensive retreats (1979 and 1981). Her readings showed:

Interpretation: Her primary clear function was reason. She compensated for vulnerable feelings with an overly aggressive will. Crown, third eye, and heart remained open throughout — she was connected to spirituality, had clear concepts, and could love. All will centers were problematic initially but resolved by the second retreat.

Chakra Diagnosis Protocol
Create a clean pendulum and sacred space
Establish your yes/no directions
Hold pendulum over each chakra center
Map swings to psychological states
Determine which chakras need charging or clearing
What did your pendulum reveal? Which chakras need attention — and how does this mirror your inner state?
