How blocks form in your energy field, what they're made of, and why they keep you from creating the life you want.
What Is a Block?
A block is dark accumulated energy consciousness. It accumulates only in the second and fourth levels of the HEF — the unstructured, feeling levels. This accumulation happens because one or more of the structured levels (1, 3, 5, 7) that guide energy flow has become disfigured.
Technically, a block includes: any disfigured structured level, any weakened or undercharged unstructured level, and the dark accumulated energy in the unstructured levels. All of these usually occur together in any one block.
How a Block Is Created
Blocks are created through a very specific chain of events — it starts with a startle or fear response:
This split between mind and feelings remains until you put it back together. Without the energy of feelings that fuels creation, your creations cannot be completed:
Your mind determines what is created.
Your feelings fuel the process of creation.
Your will determines the pattern or form of the creation.
Without all three in sync, your creation remains incomplete!
Why Blocks Don't Go Away
Blocks can't just go away — they don't have the fuel to change. The energy in the block stays split in a lower energy state until enough energy consciousness is added to bring the feelings and mind back together.
Here's a simple test: remember a painful childhood experience.
Each time a similar feeling is evoked and suppressed, more dark energy accumulates. On level 2 it becomes dark clouds. On level 4 it becomes thick, gooey mucus. Over time, blocks grow in layers and complexity.
The Anatomy of a Block
A block has several layers, from outside in:
Outer Defense
The strong outer layer that keeps most people out. It helps you behave correctly according to family and cultural norms. When something similar to a childhood wound gets through this layer, the inner defenses activate.
Emotional/Irrational Reactions (ER/IR)
The second line of defense. When the outer defense is breached, you react with emotional or irrational behavior — the leftover defense of the child you once were. It's not grown up; it's the unevolved child consciousness acting out.
Child Consciousness
Inside the block is what the Pathwork Lectures call "child consciousness" — unevolved consciousness trapped in the developmental level of a child who experienced the world in extreme opposites (good/bad, all/nothing).
The Wound
The deepest layer. Unevolved energy consciousness that was blocked, taken out of the present moment, and held stagnant in the past time frame when the wound occurred. The portion of you that stayed the age you were when the trauma happened.
The Inner Child Reframe
Brennan offers a provocative reframe of popular "inner child" therapy:
"Don't take care of your inner child! Your inner child does not exist! You created a label called 'inner child.' Inner child = unevolved consciousness. Blocks contain trapped unevolved consciousness. The real work is to release and reeducate your unevolved consciousness that is trapped inside the block."
In other words: there isn't a literal child inside you. There is trapped consciousness that needs to be released, educated, and helped to evolve into a holistic state. You also need to develop a positive adult ego to do this work.
Three Defense Types
When the hara line and VPC are distorted, three main defense configurations emerge:
Forcing Current (Aggressive)
Hara line and VPC shift to the back of the body. Back chakras become very large. You become openly aggressive and force life and others to obey your ego. This is what most people call "will" — but it's actually a distortion of will.
Passive/Submissive (Underdog)
Hara line and VPC shift forward. You become the poor, emotional underdog — manipulating through victimhood rather than aggression.
Passive-Aggressive
Hara line and VPC shift forward on the lower half, backward on the upper half. You appear submissive but then "stab in the back." The most confusing defense for others to deal with.
How Blocks Affect Your Life
When blocks are in place, your creative force encounters interference as it cascades through the HEF. The result: what you create is not what you intended. How far the outcome is from your intention depends on the strength of the blocks.
Listen to yourself when you say:
These are clues that deep inside your wound, you carry the belief that this is how the world works. Each time it happens again, the erroneous belief is confirmed. But it isn't the world — it's your blocked creative energy unable to create what you long for.
Clearing a Block
To clear a block, the healer introduces more energy consciousnessinto it. This is what happens:
The trapped creative energies are now available to create what you've longed for. The client also experiences renewed wonder, exuberance, joy, and trust — the positive qualities previously locked inside the block.
The Healing Keys
Self-Review
From Chapter 3:
Reflect on these questions honestly. Your answers are saved privately to your account or can be sent to your journal.
1. What are the things you want most in life that you have not been able to create?
2. How does this relate to your childhood experiences?
3. What simplistic dualistic reality does your unevolved child consciousness believe in?
