Underwriting & Medical Exam

Underwriting is the insurer's snapshot of your risk — set once, at application, and it can lock in for decades. Young and healthy is the cheapest you will ever be.

Rate-class estimator

Check any factor that applies to you. This is a rough illustration — only a carrier's underwriting determines your actual rate class. Honest answers at application are both a moral and a financial requirement; misrepresentation can void a claim during the two-year contestability period.

Medical-exam prep checklist

A typical paramedical exam takes 20–30 minutes at your home or office. A clean exam can move you up a rate class — a poor one can move you down or postpone approval.

  • Schedule the exam in the morning, at home or office
  • Fast 8–12 hours beforehand (water is fine)
  • Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours before
  • No strenuous exercise the day before
  • Limit caffeine the morning of the exam
  • Have your medications and dosages ready
  • List your doctors and recent visits
  • Get a good night's sleep beforehand
  • Be fully honest on the application — no misrepresentation

No-exam options

No-medical-exam and simplified-issue policies skip the exam for a higher premium and lower face amounts — suited to buyers who need speed or have a complicating condition. Guaranteed-issue asks no health questions but carries the highest premiums and a graded death benefit. Choose full underwriting when you can: one 30-minute exam saves premiums for decades.
