Science & the Aura

How Western scientific views from Newton to the holographic universe parallel our self-understanding — and why our old models of reality are outdated.

Why This Matters

More than we admit, we are products of our Western scientific heritage. How we think and our self-definitions are based on the same scientific models physicists use. As science has evolved, so should our self-understanding — but most of us still operate on outdated models.

This section shows how the scientific view of reality supports the idea that we are composed of energy fields — and goes beyond into a holographic universe where all things are interconnected.

Newtonian Physics (17th-19th Century)

Until eastern religions began impacting our culture, much of our self-definition was based on Newtonian physics: the universe as composed of solid objects and fundamental building blocks called atoms.

Newtonian mechanics successfully described the motion of planets, machines, and fluids. It held firm ideas of absolute time and space, and physical phenomena as strictly causal — like balls colliding on a pool table. Everything could be described objectively.

We still define most of our experience in terms of absolute, three-dimensional space and linear time. We see ourselves as mechanical, as "itsy-bitsy Ping Pong balls whirling around each other." But this is no longer the complete picture.

Field Theory (19th Century)

In the early 19th century, new phenomena couldn't be described by Newtonian physics. The discovery of electromagnetism led to the concept of a field — a condition in space with the potential of producing a force.

Faraday and Maxwell found it more appropriate to say each charge creates a "disturbance" in the space around it, so the other charge feels a force. The universe is filled with fields that create forces interacting with each other.

In the last 15-20 years (100 years behind the physicists), we've begun using these concepts personally: "good vibes," "sending energy," reading each other's thoughts. We know immediately whether we like someone — explained by harmony or disharmony in field interactions.

Relativity (1905)

Einstein shattered Newton's concepts. Space is not three-dimensional, and time is not a separate entity. Both form a four-dimensional "space-time" continuum. Time is not linear, not absolute — it's relative.

Two observers will order events differently in time if they move at different velocities. In certain conditions, two observers can see events in reverse time.

We haven't yet integrated this into our lives. When we get a psychic flash of a friend in trouble and call to check, and nothing happened, we conclude it was imagination. We're using Newtonian thinking to validate super-sensory experience. Since time is not linear, the event may have already occurred, may occur in the future, or may be a probable occurrence that never manifests.

Matter Is Energy

Another consequence of relativity: matter and energy are interchangeable. Mass is a form of energy. Matter is slowed-down or crystallized energy.

"Your bodies are energy. That is what this whole book is about!"

Paradox & Complementarity (1920s)

Physics moved into the strange subatomic world where every question to nature was answered with a paradox. One experiment proves light is a particle; a small change proves it's a wave. Both must be used to describe light — physicists call this complementarity.

We moved from either/or to both/and. On a personal level, we're no longer just bad or good, just hating or loving. We can feel both love and hate for the same person. The old dualism of God/Devil dissolves into a whole where the divine contains both — white light and the velvet black void.

The Holographic Universe

Physicists found particles can be waves at the same time because they're not physical waves but probability waves — probabilities of interconnections. There is no such thing as a "thing." What we called "things" are events or paths that might become events.

Our world of solid objects dissolves into a dynamic web of inseparable energy patterns. The universe is a dynamic inseparable whole which always includes the observer.

Dr. David Bohm describes an "implicate enfolded order" — the unmanifested foundation from which all manifest reality ("explicate unfolded order") arises. Every piece of the universe contains the whole, like a hologram where each fragment reconstructs the entire image.

The Holographic Brain

Dr. Karl Pribram accumulated evidence that the brain's deep structure is essentially holographic. The brain structures sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch holographically — information distributed throughout the system so each fragment can produce the whole.

Parapsychologists have searched for the energy that transmits telepathy, psychokinesis, and healing. From the holographic view, these events emerge from frequencies that transcend time and space — they don't need to be transmitted. They are potentially simultaneous and everywhere.

Superluminal Connectedness

In 1964, physicist J.S. Bell published a mathematical proof: subatomic "particles" are connected in a way that transcends space and time. Anything happening to one particle affects others immediately — faster than the speed of light.

This "superluminal connectedness" has been supported by experimentation. It stands outside Einstein's relativity. We may eventually learn to be consciously aware of our instantaneous connections with the world and each other — reading minds, truly understanding each other deeply.

Morphogenetic Fields

Rupert Sheldrake proposes that all systems are regulated by invisible organizing fields — morphogenetic fields. These fields serve as blueprints for form and behavior, with effects just as strong at a distance as close up.

When one member of a species learns a new behavior, the field changes. If repeated long enough, "morphic resonance" affects the entire species. This is the Hundredth Monkey Principle — after a threshold, new behaviors spread without normal communication.

Multi-Dimensional Reality

Physicist Jack Sarfatti suggests superluminal connectedness works through a higher plane of reality. Things are more connected on a plane "above" ours, and those things connect through an even higher plane.

This describes a world very much like the aura and the universal energy field. Our higher bodies (higher auric frequencies) are more connected to others' higher bodies than our physical bodies are. As awareness progresses into higher frequencies, we become more connected until eventually one with the universe.

The Conclusion

Physicists state there are no basic building blocks of matter — the universe is an inseparable whole, a vast web of interacting probabilities. Since we are inseparable parts of that whole, we can enter a holistic state of being, become the whole, and tap into the creative powers of the universe.

Becoming a healer means moving toward this universal creative power (experienced as love) by reidentifying with being energy fields. Higher consciousness becomes associated with higher frequency and greater coherency.
